As the time for his trial drew neai Young had oretendgd to be insane. Dr. Thomas \V. Young, the dentist who, in murdering his Grace Young, out-did in science the Leopold and i.oeb crime, committed suicide by strangling himself with a piece of wire while in his cell. He was arrested m June, after a four months’ search for his wealthy, beautiful wife, who had mysteriously disappeared alter-a roadhouse party. She was the widow of Pat-Grogan, the millionaire oil king. , , ... At- first. Young said she had 'ett him to get a divorce, but later he confessed that lie had asphyxiated the woman with soninoform, a deadly dental gas. and then entombed the body in concrete in a cistern, where the detectives found the remains, perfectly preserved. Later Young pretended to be insane, nd one of the most sensational trials ever heard in Californian courts was in fuU swing when Young took his own life. , Mrs Young disappeared in rebruarv. and the police, taking their cue from the McClintoek-Shepperd case, became suspicious when they found that her 19-vear-old, _son bv her first husband had been induced bv Young to make a will in bis (Young’s) favour. These suspicions they regarded as- confirmed when thev were informed by Young’s office assistant that her emp'oyer had made her a present of a valuab'e ring which his wife used to wear. On being taken into custody, Young was deiced fond by the police, and eventually lie said that- if he were taken “down town’’ and given a good dinner he odd toll everything. And he did, even G> how he got his step-son to mix the cement- .in which the woman’s •odv was hidden.
