AURORA AUSTRALIS.
VISIBLE FROM HAAVERA. ■The ,auroa australis was visible from Hiawera last night, and, •although it did not reach nip in the sky as far as the display of- lour years ago, it was just as bright. One observer says that at ten minuites to .seven there was no sign or the phenomenon, but seven minutes later it was clearly visible. It extended from south-east round to south-west and came nip to about 20 or 30 degrees. However, after .about ten minutes view, clouds came over and the rosy shafts of light had entirely vanished when the Sky cleared half ,an hour later. Nevertheless, it is stated that later in the evening it was again visible. The aurora .australis is visible ill the southern skies and the aurora borealisi in the northern skies. Its nature is rather obscure, but it is supposed to be an .electrical phenomenon.
. In the polar regions it is a frequent sight, and it is there seen in all its brilliance, .shafts of light shoting ‘high into the sky and accompanied by a hissing and crackling noise. The phenomenon has some connection with the sun and .sun spot®. About four years ago, .when the last display was seen from Hawera, there was an enormous spot in the central disc of the sun.
