THINGS POLITICAL
(To the Editor!. Sir. —Your correspondent “AntiHumbug” asks, “Are , we the most backward part of New Zealand?” 1 think—if I ,may use an Irishism —that the more, intelligent section of us would adniit that we are. We are. as 5t were, the ‘‘dead end” of New Zealand. We are off the main lines of communication, and, even allowing foi the increase o.f motor traffic, are in a sense isolated. One might compare our position in a large measure to that, of tire Breton peasants of France, who in culture and intelligence lag a century behind the rest of France. But, then, was it not the great Pasteur-who declared that "he. wished he might have the contented mind of a simple Breton peasant? Perhaps that accounts for our action in returning tc. Parliament a member of a party which a correspondent in your paper a few weeks ago dubbed as a “dud” political party. And he was. not contradicted. 1 think it is a mistake on Mr part bringing other speakers of his arty here. Why not trust to our simplicity and gui'elessness? Discussion leads to doubt, and has not doubt been called “the mother of infidelity?”—l am. etc., WISEACRE. Hawera.
