Air. J. G. Osborne will arrive in Ha~ wera on Itlie 24th, and will remain here for the season of “The Toreador.”
The following cable message has been received by Defence headquarters, Wellington, from the Secretary of State for War, London : “Have learned with great regret of the death of General Melvill. Please accept and convey to the relatives the deep sympathy" of myself and the Army Council.”—Press Assn.
The coming of age of Mr James Fergus,son, eldest son of New Zealand’s Governor-General (Sir Charles Fergusson) was celebrated at Ivi'kerran House (says a London cable). Presentations from the tenantry included a set of guns. Mr Fergusson, in returning thanks, 'regretted the absence of his x>arents, who. had cabled requesting that the employees of the estate be granted two days’ holiday in honour of his coming of age. t
A pleasant function took place in the Parish Hall, Kapo.nga, on Saturday evening, when Miss A. PaAvlinson, in view of her approaching departure from the district, was entertained as the guest of honour by a small party of her more intimate friends. An enjoyable dance programme interspersed with varied other items of entertainment, was arranged, and during an interval Miss R awl in son was the recipient of an e’egant gold wristlet watch presented by the gathering. The presentation ceremony was conducted by Mr J. Hessell, who referred to the very high esteem in which Miss Rawlinson was held and in wishing her the best of good fortune in the future, requested her to. accept the gift as a memento of her association with her many friends in Kaponga.
