The funeral of Major-General Mel/ill took place at Wellington to-day, •and was a very impressive spectacle. The first portion of the service took :> .aeo at ~ St. Paul’s Pro-Cathedral, where Bishop Sprott, assisted by Archdeacon Johnson and the Rev. A. V. Rranchi, officiated. The church was packed. About 10 o’clock the cortege .eft the church and proceeded by way of Molesworth Street, Hamilton Quay, \Villis Street, Ghuzn.ee and other streets to Karori cemetery. Three thousand troops, with, bands, took part. The riderless charger of the late G.O.C led by a non-commissioned officer, followed" the gun carriage—-a pathetic sight. Then came two lorries bearing floral tributes. Included in the procession was a large body of returned soldiers, Cabinet Ministers, and members of Parliament. Thousands of spectators lined the route of the march. At the graveside the service was also impressive. As the procession left the Cathedra 1 , and also at the conclusion of the service at the cemetery, thirteen minute guns were fired. Hundreds of messages of condolence have been received by the deceased general’s widow and family.—Press Assn.
