WEST HAM GUARDIANS.
THE OUTDOOR RELIEF SCANDAL. MINISTRY OF HEALTH STANDS FIRM. BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT. LONDON, Sept. 16. \ The Ministry of Health has decided not to recede from its attitude towards West Ham Guardians. It has decided itself to issue food tickets,, not exceeding £15,000 weekly, when the Guardians’ resources are exhausted. The decision may need legislation, and is likely to be’ extended to several other London boroughs and parts of Glasgow, where a situation similar to West Ham is rapidly approaching. [The West Ham Guardians passed a resolution reiterating their refusal to reduce the outdoor relief frqm 50s to 55s weekly as requested by the Minister of Health. The resolution Avas passed after a violent discussion, in the course of A\ T hich the chairman of the Finance Committee said they intended to fight the Minister. Other speakers declared their readiness to go to prison. A statement of accounts presented showed a deficit of £150,000. A million and a half is due to the Ministry of Health and the £300,000 overdraft at the bank, Avhich Avas sanctioned by Parliament, is nearly exhausted. A letter was read from the bank insisting on the restriction of the overdraft from day to day to one-third of the outstanding uncollected rates.]
