lY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT. LONDON, Sept. 16. Sir Arthur Cocks, Agent-General for New South Wales, cabled Sydney yesterday relinquishing. his position from September 17. He will return to New South Wales with his wife via Suez by the first available steamer, probably not before November. He prefers that any statement regarding the circumstances of his resignation should come from the Givernment.
The rumour persistently connects Sir T. A. Coghlan with the successorship. Sir T. A. Coghlan and his wife arrived vesterday. SYDNEY, Sept. 17. *ln the Assembly, the Premier (Mr I. T. Lang) stated, regarding the message announcing Sir Arthur Cocks’ resnation. that the Government had decided at a Cabinet meeting on September 9 that it would be in the interests of the State if Sir Arthur Cocks were asked to resign, and a cable to that effect was despatched to him. Mr Lang, in reply to a question as to the reason actuating the Government in terminating the appointment, said that when he reached the Treasury and saw the manner in which the business of the State <liad been conducted and the general trying and endeavourU" to- fake a surplus, it so shook his condenee in Sir Arthur Cocks that- he considered it in the best interests of the State that Sir Arthur Cocks should resign.
