QUALITY OF BASIC SLAG. (From Our Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, Sept. 17. There was an allegation in the form of a question made in the House to-day relative to the quality of imported basic slag, so largely used for manures. “Is the Minister for Agriculture aware that much of the basic slag now being sold is of much poorer quality and it is not worth, importing?” asked Mr. Hawken, who suggested that samples should be taken. Air. Noswortliy- gave an assurance that he would get his department to make inquiries into the position. MAIN HIGHWAYS. The amendment to the Main Highways Bill, introduced by GovernorGeneral’s message to-night, authorises the Highways Board to grant subsidies for maintenance in excess of the present limit of one-tliird up to pound for pound in the case where the board considers it was desirable. This clause meets the special position of the South Island, where funds are accumulating. The Bill also sets out the scale of subsidies for standard bridges.
