The Nelson branch of the Labour Partv has been advised that the nomination of Mr T. Brindlfe, of Wellington, president of the -New Zealand Labour Party, as the Labour candidate for the Nei-son seat has been confirmed. Changes in the staff of the Bank of New Zealand, at Manaia, are announced by the local newspaper. Mr. S.. G. McGowan has been transferred to Inglewood and Mi\ •E. Maunsell, of Auckland, has joined the Manaia branch.

Governor-General and Lady Fergusson spent a busy day in New Plymouth yesterday. A civic reception was largely attended and an address presented. The Governor attended a Rotary Club luncheon, afterwards inspecting a parade of veterans of three wars —Maori, South African and European. He presented the Imperial Challenge Shield to the Technical College and the Weekly Press shield to the Boys' High School. Last night the vice-regal party was entertained by the Caledonian Society. The visit extends throughout the week and a trip is to be made to Mount Egmont. The death of Mi’. Gordon Carter, second son of Mr. and Mrs. C. Garter, of. New Plymouth, took place yesterday. The late Mr. Carter.was for a number of years on the staff of Messrs. Burgess, Fraser and Co., of New Plymouth, and later had charge of the firm’s branch at Hiawera. Some years ago he entered into business on his own account at Manutahi. Mr. Carter had not been well for some time and, although lie went home last week owing to' sickness, it was not expected- that the trouble was of wo serious a nature, so that the end came quite unexpected.

The remains of the late Rev. John Dawson, General Secretary of the New Zealand Alliance, were cremated at Karori, Wellington, yesterday. The esteem in which he was held was shown by the very large attendance at the preliminary service in the Methodist Church at Taranaki Street, where the principal speakers, were the Rev. James Cooker, Messrs- L. M. Isitt, M.P., -and G M. Luke. The .service was conducted by the Rlev. T. R. Richards,, of New Plymouth, president of the New Zealand Methodist Conference. All churches were represented and many public men, including all the Wellington members of Parliament, were present.

Yesterday being the occasion of Air Hunt’s first visit to Eltham as a stipendiary magistrate, a welcome was extended to him by the members of the legal profession represented in the court. Mr T. B. Crump expressed the hope that his Worship’s association with the legal fraternity at Eltham would prove pleasant to him and would assist him in dealing with the business of the court as expeditiously as possible Mr Cfumo also referred to the illness of Mr A' M. Mowlem, S.M., who, the speaker and his colleagues trusted, would soon, be restored to health. Sergeant Henry, -on behalf of the police, supported Mr Crump’s remarks. Mr Hunt expressed. his appreciation of the kind'.v welcome extended and intimated he was pleased to be able to state that as Mr Mowlem was only suffering from a slight nervous breakdown, it was expected that liis illness would not be of very long duration.
