COMMUNIST ONSLAUGHT.
DIRECTED BY MOSCOW. WHAT EMPIRE PACES. LONDON, Aug. 23. The Daily Mail, in a loading article, says: “Various parts of the Empire at present are exposed to a formidable aucl concerted Communist onslaught, which is financed and directed from Moscow. The Bolsliviks, using every kind of poisoned weapon, concentrated on a vague nationalist upheaval in China and turned it into a furious anti-British boycott. They also aim at producing disaffection among sailors and dock-workers in Australia, Canada and Britain, in pursuance of their plan for specially attacking the ocean transport. from which Britain draws her life-blood. A plot to undermine naval discipline includes the sending of bogus blnjackets to harangue Hyde Park audiences on the alleged wrongs of the lower-deck.
“Revolutionary hornets won’t bleed the Empire to death, but 've. nurst recognise the existence of a malignant conspiracy, backed by plenty of money and fertile brains, and take the recjuisite measures to crush it.” The Daily Express says: “The official voice "of British Labour has yet to be heard on the Communist'trouble. Certainly, Mr Will Thorne, M.P., says that the frothy mouthings of the Reds are merelv piffle; Mr J. R. Clynes, M.P., says it is childish; and Mr Pred Bramley adds that the Trade; Union Council is not likely to make any concessions to the extremists.
“But the mass of British workers would welcome a real stand against the disruptive forces, which at present are doing much as they please.” The Daily Graphic declares: “It is incomprehensible why the sober minded trade unionists, who hate strikes and violence, stand tongue-tied while a few extremists choose the leaders’ policv for them.” . The Morning Post comments: “While Labour’s so-called moderates, like the former Cabinet Minister, Mr. Arthur Henderson, who at present is presiding over the Second International at Marseilles, associates with such doubtful company, it is vain to protest their dissociation from the extremists.” The newspapers call atention to the fact, that the leader of the Southwark unemployed, who is receiving 55s as a weeklv dole, and also received an outfit of clothes from the taxpayers’ money, when recently arrested had £l6 in his pockets.
