HOUSEHOLD TOOL CHEST.
TIME AND TEMPER SAVER. Did you ever know the man who could find the requisite tools straight away, when some small jo 1 # has to be undertaken? An unconscionable amount of time and temper would be saved if the house-mother organised the household tool-chest herself. It should contain an axe, 'a, hatchet, a saw, a hammer, a tack hammer, a mallet, three or four gimlets and bradawls of different sizes; two screwdrivers a,ml two chisels, also of varying sizes; a small plane, jack-knife, a pair of large scissors or shears. Also an assortment of screws and nails of various sizes, from large spikes, down to small tacks; not forgetting some large and small brass-headed nails, together with hooks of different sizes on which to hang things, and a. supply of staples. Keep nails and screws in a wooden box made with divisions to accommodate the various sorts' and sizes. It is well if a special cupboard can be designated for storing tools; a roomy, light place, with at least one large shelf about three feet from the floor. Beneath this shelf a deep drawer is a great boon, especially if divided into two compartments, where may be housed glue, chalk, balls of twine, and so forth. A further convenience consists in shelves at the sides of the cupboard for glue-pots, paste-pots and brushes, painting tins, cans of oil or varnish, and so forth. The tools themselves should be suspended against the wall, above the large shelf, or laid across nails or hooks of proper sizei to support them. This is much better than keeping them in a box.
