CAUSE OF DISTURBANCE

NATIVE WOMAN IN COURT

A disturbance in Albion Street early yesterday evening resulted in the appearance in the Hawera Alagistrate’s Court this morning of Kuratau Wharemati, a young Maori woman, whose liking for the “waipiro” has on previous occasions led to her being sternly dealt with by the law. Outlining the facts of the case to Mr J. S. Murray, J.P., Sergeant Henry said that at about 5.25 yesterday evening Constable Mullen received a comp hint concerning a disturbance in Albion Street between Maoris and a oakeha.. On making investigations, lie saw a horse in Collins Street driven i v a Maori woman, with a Maori man Iving on the floor of the vehicle. On noticing the constable approaching, the woman nudged her husband, who promptly deserted the scene and left the woman to the mercy of the law The constable jumped into the cart and took the reins, whereupon the woman also essayed to leave. In this, however, she was not successful, as, leaving the vehicle in the charge of bystanders, t.he policeman effected an arrest. Defendant’s previous convictions were also mentioned by the sergeant. A fine of" £2 10s was imposed, in default seven days’ imprisonment.
