OPUNAKE HARBOUR.
AIEETING OF BOARD. At the September meeting of the Opunake Flaruonr Board the engineer, in the course of his report referred to the following matters: Though weather has made work on the staging difficult three . hays hav e been completed during the month. The staging is now completed to 600 feet, making two thirds of the total length. The special work at the bend, starting at 650 feet, will make progress slower for some time. Bench —A good many slips have occurred ou the land side of the bench cutting on account of a- seam of clay which is saturated with water. The work has again run into ground containing a good many boulders. The outer face of the cliff has again been .severely attacked by the seas, and several falls have occurred J Alole —Only short hours have been possible, but advantage has bee u taken of all that could be worked. The work carried out has been chiefly confined to topping off the bays from 150 to 300 feet. Wharf—AVork has been restarted on th e piles. No further work on the abutment has been jiossible or advisa file.
The engineer submitted a report and estimate of the works and the total estimate to complete the works. The report was considered in committee. The matter of obtaining the advice of a consulting engineer was discussed, but- no decision was arrived at. The engineer said that he was not averse to the board obtaining a special report from an engineer. When ho first took over the position he was under the impression that lie would have Air. Cyrus ‘Williams as consulting engineer. He was conscious the work was progressing. The men were doing good work and had lost no time —they had worked whenever it was possible to do so. The weather conditions had been atrocious. It was decided to write to the Alarine Department and to the legal adviser oF the Harbour Association with reference to raising 10 per cent, additional on the £50,000 loan. The board intends to strike a. similar rate to that imposed last year.
