DEPORTATION BOARD.
CHARGES AGAINST WALSH AND JOHNSON.
OTHER PROCEEDINGS THREATENED.
BY CABLE-PRESS ASSOCIATION-COPYRIGHT. SYDNEY, Sep. 9. The Deportation Board resumed today to hear the charges against lorn Walsh and Jacob Johnson. Alter an appeal by counsel for Johnson it was decided "to hear the cases separately, the case against Walsh being taken first. , , . ' » Counsel for Walsh asked, in view oi the proposed prosecutions of striking seamen and as the charge on which they were proceeded against rendered them liable to be ordered back to their ships and taken away, would the board give an undertaking that they would not be taken out of the Commonwealth, as if they were there would be a danger that Walsh and Johnson would be deprived of the evidence of important witnesses. After the board had stated that it had no power, counsel said he would take other steps. Mr Lamb, counsel for the Crown, then opened the case against Walsh. He traced the developments leading to the issue of summonses, and said he did not fear any threats of proceedings under the libel law. Counsel for Walsh interrupted, and asked the board whether his side could have the liberty of taking proceedings in the event of Mr Lamb being allowed to make statements in his opening to which the respondents take exception, and which might damage them m the eyes of the public. The board adjourned upon counsel tor Walsb giving an undertaking that he would be able to state to-morrow whether he would take steps in another court to test Mr Lamb’s right to open the case against Walsh and put what lie claimed were biassed and prejudiced inferences before the tribunal.
