FIRE.
SLIGHT DAMAGE TO SHOP. Shortly after four o’clock yesterday afternoon the Eire Brigade received a call to the shop occupied, by Mr E. Taylor, draper, of High’Street. The brigade was very smartly on. the scene, and soon had a lead of hose on to one of the windows of the upstairs portion, used by the family as living quarters, from which ; was issuing a great , deal of smoke. The fire, however, was in the lower portion of the building, towards the rear of the shop, and the brigade had to, go through Mr Westwood's shop and use the hose from the rear of those premises. The outbreak was promptly extinguished. Very little damage was caused by the fire, but a great deal of the stock of the shop was ruined by water. _ Mrs Taylor was in the back garden at the time of the outbreak, hud there was no one on the premises Svhen it occurred. The cause of the fire is unknown. Mr Taylor is at present in Auckland. The building, which belonged to Air W. Spence, of Victoria Street, was insured with the Norwich Union, office for £IOOO. Mr Taylor’s stock was. jpsured for £1650 with the Phoenix Office. i The amount of the damage is not yet known, but it is believed that it is not verv considerable.
