SPORTS PLAN CAMPAIGN. A meeting of delegates of the various sports bodies wa6 held in the Fire Station last night, when eight clubs wore represented. Air Morgan was voted to the chair. Mr L. Matter introduced the sports candidate (Miss M. Instoue) to the meeting. In opening the meeting the chairman said that he considered the first business to be done should be the election of officers. After taking nominations the following were elected on behalf of the sports candidate: Secretaries, Messrs A. E. Burgess and Henry; treasurer, Mr J. Goodwin. It was decided that all present form themselves into a general committee. An executive committee consisting of the secretaries and treasurer. Airs Weir, Alisses AlcCalman and Williams, Alessrs Jones (chairman), Morgan and Hearn was appointed. Airs Goodwin was appointed to the general publicity committee, and Mr Plank was appointed press agent for the committee. It was decided to open an account with the Commercial Bank of Australasia, Ltd., and the chairman of the executive and the treasurer were given power to operate the account. A lengthy programme of activities was drawn up, which promises to be not only remunerative, but also of considerable interest and amusement to the public. Green was chosen as the official colour for the sports candiadte. COUNTRY CANDIDATE. AIEETING AT AIATAPU. Activities in connection .with |the : forthcoming Municipal Band’s queen carnival were advanced a further stage last evening, when, at a meeting held at Alatapu, it was decided te nominate a, country districts queen candidate, subject to the approval of the A. and P. Association, which had previously been approached on the subject. A deputation consisting of Alessrs G. FI. Weir (general secretary), W. Hawkins. J. B. Laurenson and E. Evans, representing the general committee, waited on the meeting. Air Hawkins exphiiued that the sub■ect of having a country districts’ candidate nominated lfad been mooted, and a deputation from the genera; committee had waited on tlie A. and P. Association on Thursday. The deputation had been favourably received, the association members intimating that they would give support to a country candidate and that further consideration wou'd be given the project at a meeting to be held next week. In the meantime, however, the meeting at Alatapu had been arranged, and if as a result a. nomination was made, it could be submitted to the A. and P. Association for approval. In the interests of the- country candidate, whoever might lie • nominated, it was of course advisable that on'y one should cuter the competition. The objects of the campaign were briefly outlined by Mr Weir, who exnhiined that an effort , was being made for the purpose of securing the funds necessary to provide new instruments for the Hawera Municipal. Baud, and allow the establishment- of a junior hand, and also to provide uniforms for the recently-formed' pipe band. As these organisations were a big asset to the district, it was hoped that t-lie appeal would meet with a generous response. Two queen candidates, representing the sports bodies and the Hawera Scottish Society respectively, had already been nominated, and it was hoped to have candidates representing the musical societies and the country districts. As there had appeared a likeliliocl of the two latter being nominated, the closing date for entries had been extended from Monday, August 31, to Monday, September 7. If nominated, a country candidate should have a strong following, as the whole of the country districts would probably support, while the aid of the A. and P. Association had already been assured.

It was further pointed out that there remained but little time to decide on

the nominee, as it was desired that the nomination papers should bo in the hands of the general seeertary not 'ater than Monday, and that all tlie candidates should be present at the concert arranged to take place at Hawera on Tuesday. Air R. West, the convenor of the meeting, said that the proposal to enter a country candidate had been considered locally, and Alessrs AV. T. Seed and G. C. D. AVillis, who had been approached, had intimated their willingness to nominate Aliss \ r . Beech, of Alatapu, subject to her consent, which the speaker understood would be granted. He thought that considerable loca; support would he forthcoming,- and if the other country centres would give assistance the candidature would prove a strong one and be of great benefit to the campaign. Air A. Thomas and others in attendance also intimated that .focal help could be depended upon, but it was pointed out that in arranging concerts, etc., ' he committee might be handicapped in the matter of securing outside musicians and performers. Alembers of the deputation gave assurance that in the matter mentioned the help of the general committee could be loked for, and it was suggested that a loca] committee be formed, and that an endeavour be made to arrange for committees in the various oilier country centres. After further consideration, it was decided to accept the nomination of Mi s>s Beet'll as the country districts’ I lice n candidate, subject to the approval of the A. and P. Association, Air West being appointed lion, secretary pro bem and authorised to form a committee to undertake the necessary organisation. OABiNIVAL CONCERT. The baud’s carnival concert, to be held in tlie Opera House on Tuesday evening, promises to provide one of the best programmes pub on in HaweHa. Variety i'-si what t-lie commit, teo bias aimed iaif in arranging the programme and every item is being given by artists with tlie best of reputations. The prize winners at tlie recent competitions ini Hawefai figure well in tlie programme. The items which tlie Savage clulb- have kindly consented to contribute should Ibe of “tip-top” order, amd ais a fitting finale to the programme, the Hlaiwera ladies’ brass iba-nd, which will 'be conducted by an experienced professor, who has just recently arirved from Melbourne, should be one of the “star” items. The introduction of tlie queen Candidiateis will give the public an opportunity of selecting their “fancy” before voting commences. As a packed house is expected, patrons should be early to get the best seats and hear tire" Hiawera Orchestral Society’s orchestra, which will commence playing -at 7.45 p.m.
