THE CASTLE PLEDGE.

I promise to smile every time I can. and to chase all the frowns into the dark cave, where the Smile Giant will kill them with his Magic Sword Happiness. Well, My Young Folks, — . What jolly times you’ve had these holidays! Nearly every letter I have read lately tells me. that- some Smile has had another Smile friend staying with her. T know just what lovely times you can have in even two weeks, especially if you can have a mate to stay with you to share the fun. Mv fairies have all had a splendid time, too. In fact, for several days I had no one at home to send for your letters. It has been quite a change, to get letters which did not begin by making excuses for not writing, because home work had to be done. I hope you’ll take this hint and not use t! o home-work excuse in future. I know lessons have to be learnt; and I hope you’ll never neglect anything that will educate you; but, if you really haven’t time to write, you need not excuse yourself. I expect you’ve, all decided to work very hard this last term. Spring then will be a waking-up and working time for boys and girls, as well as for flowers, and trees and animals. Now, boys, what are you going to play ? Football is over. I’m going to spy and. see how many windows you break, or whether yon can place the cricket ball’ wherever you wish. That is one of the marks of a good batsman, you know. Broken windows should go against your scoring. What about the girls? Tell me, what do you play now? Do you think you have as much fun as the boys? One girl told me there was to be a basket-ball tournament in Hawera next Saturday, and I’ve promised to be there. Boys, come along, too, and barrack for your school team. Girls play ever so much better with someone ,to. ; encourage them. I’ll be so excited to know who can play basket-ball best. Huh along now, for T know you are anxious to talk to your old friends after the holidays. • Your fairy chum, THE SMILE QUEEN
