A serious accident is reported from Riwaka Valley track extension work, in connection with which Darcy Mickell met his death as . a result of an explosion a few days ago. A young man named Raymond* Isaac Gibson, while scrub cutting, fell into a dry river bed, sustaining serious injuries to his head, including laceration of the brain. His condition is grave. EX-BANK MANAGER IN TROUBLE! HAMILTON, Sept. 4. Arthur Charles Tliynne, of Morrinsville, ex-bank manager, was found guilty of failing to kep proper ho°ks. The jury made a recommendation to mercy. On four other charges of breaches of the Bankruptcy Act he was found not guilty. Judge Herdman said that prisoner s experience should have shown him the necessity of keeping proper records. He was satisfied that the prisoner was not honest in all his dealings, and that ! t was not a case for probation in the interests of commercial ’.morality, hut he would have to impose punishment. Prisoner was sentenced to three months’ hard labour. HOUSE DESTROYED AT WELLINGTON. WELLINGTON, Sept. 4. In a. high gusty wind' at 11.30 o’clock this morning, a house in Gladstone Terrace; owned, by Martin Kennedy and occupied bv Caotain Sommerville, of H.M.S. Dunedin, was completely gutted by fire in a very short space of time. * The house was insured for £2500 in the British Traders’ office, and the furniture, of which practically none was saved, was insured in the Northern office for £I9OO. Captain Sommerville left Auckland on Saturday, for a 1 five weeks’ cruise of the Islands Mrs. Sommerville was out at the time. The cook heard a crackling in the kitchen roof at- 11.10 a.m., and shortly afterwards smoke came through a grating in the ceiling. It is thought a defective chimney was the cause of the fire.
