John Weyieuter, eoiiA’icted -on 15 charges of indecent assault,- carnal knoAvledge and rape of girls aged 7 to 13 years, Avas sentenced by Judge Herd-man to 2 years each On five charges, sentence to be cumulative, and one year on each of ten charges to be concurrent with the cumulative sentence, making ■ ten years to serve. His Honour characterised the offences as the most revolting that had ever come under his notice. “It may be,” he added, “that the judge should order a flogging also, but in view of the recent decision of the Court of Appeal in the case when I considered a flogging Avas desirable, I refrain.” The prisoner had only been in the Dominion for three-years and nothing \A r as known of his antecedents. , The judge commented if that was the type of immigrant coming to the Dominion, the outlook AA-as not bright. William Sydney Fergusson was sentenced to tAvo years’ probation for obtaining a quantity of coal by means of false pretenses.
