SHIP AFIRE

OUTBREAK ON THE KENT.
APPARENTLY HAS GOOD HOLD. (UV TELEGRAPH. —PREBS ASSOCIATION.) AUCKLAND, Sep. 3. A.n outbreak of lire occurred on the Federal steamer Kent, winch, has been Limcho'red in the stream lor the pasib live dayis owing ito the crew having come out as a result of the shipping strike. The lire is in number two hold, which contained inward Auckland cargo, lit had been discharged ibeiore the vessel went to the anchorage. The cargo remaining in number two hold is lor southern ports. Dense smoke is issuing from the hold. The fire brigade iis aboard. Th© Kent is enveloped in dense smoke from amidships aft. So far the fire fighters’ appliances have made no noticeable impression. The wind is light, blowing from stem to stern. The fire float on one side of the Kent is pouring in tons of water from four huge hoses. The Harbour Board tug is on the other side in the event of being called on to tow the vessel inshore. . A hole is being drilled in the side of the Kent to 'allow the hose to play directly on the seat of fire.
