BEING RECRUITED IN ENGLAND BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRHIGT LONDON, Sep. 1. The Daily Herald (the Labour paper), under the heading, “Government’s new civilian army—Against whom?” quotes an Army order, in which a call is made for recruits between 25 and 45 divided into three grades—supervising constables, grade one constables, and grade two constables. It says each War Department constable will be employed and paid by the War Department. They will be sworn in as specials and have powers of lawful arrest. , No member of the War Department constabulary may be a member of any trade union or similar union, association or society, other than any formed within the constabulary. The Herald suggests that this force is aimed directly against unionist©, and in that connection refers to the expiry of the coal truce on M a y 1 next, regarding which possibilities of trouble are hinted at.
