COASTGUARD ’PLANES.
AN AMERICAN PROPOSAL. RUM-RUNNERS AND RESCUES. WASHINGTON, Aug. 27. The United States Coastguard has requested the Budget Bureau to approve, of an appropriation of 500,000' dollars for the establishment of a seaplane fleet, the coastguard officers maintaining that it would be invaluable to Prohibition enforcement, the protection of life in a navigation emergency, and national defence, they contend that, after the initial cost, maintenance would be comparatively small. • j Congress, seven years ago. author-"l*-"fsed Hie Coastguard to establish 10 seaplane stations along the . Atlantic and Pacific seaboards, though no money was ever appropriated for ’planes or hangars. If General H. M. Lord, Budget Director, approves, despite President Coolidge’s appeal for economy Congress will probably allot the monev. In addition to flying far out, to sea and spotting rum-runners, the ’planes could drop lines to stranded vessels to permit the operation ot breeches buoys. The fleet would he constantly in service and always ready for war in an emergency.
