TN RAILWAY STRIKE

AGREED TO BY MEN. WHO REITERATE THEIR DEMANDS. BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT (Received Aug. 31, 12.15 p.m.) BRISBANE, Aug. 31. The Premier announced, after a Cabinet meeting, that it had been decided to request the president of the Arbitration Court to call a compulsory conference on Alonday of all unions who were party to the basic wage claim. The State Strike Council has agreed to the compulsory conference. A mass meeting of railwayman car■ried a motion that a protest be sent to Air Bruce against the tactics being pursued to deport Air Walsh and others. The meeting also passed resolutions to the effect that the railwaymen stood solid for the restoration of the 5 per cent reduction, the right to hold stop-work meetings, and the restoration of the 36f hour week to clerks. Country centres are beginning to feel the pinch, and storekeepers’ supplies of blitter, sugar, flour and potatoes are giving out. Bakers have about a week’s supply of flour. AIAn.S HELD UP. (Received . Aug. 31, 1.30 p.m.) AIELBOURNE, Aug. 31

The Postmaster-General (Mr Gibson) said that the strike in Queensland was leading to a very serious .position as far as mails were concerned. He had received a telegram from Queensland stating that mails had been declared “black” and that an accumulation of mails was lying at various railway stations. The department was doing its utmost to cope with the matter, and was employing steamers and motor cars, hut to attempt to, cover an extensive State like .Queensland with motors would he very expensive and almost impossible with* the resources at the disposal of the Commonwealth Government.

A mass meeting of Victorian railwaymen carried a motion of sympathy; and congratulating the Queensland railwavmen on their strike.
