RECORD IMMIGRATION.
ABSORPTION AN EASY TASK.
from our parliamentary REPORTER. WELLINGTON, Aug. 28. Owing chiefly to the greatly reduced fates oifered to the public under the new agreement entered into by the Imperial and New Zealand Governments there was an increase of 30.7 per cent, of Government assisted immigrants to the Dominion over the totals of either of the preceding years. “Tlieir physical fitness and keenness for work,” observes the annual report of the Under-Secretary of the Immigration Department, “made the matter of their absorption a pleasurab e and easy task. The increase really had no effect on the labour market. * since throughout the year the deal and s made to the Department were always greater than* the supply, principally for workers in skilled trades and farm and domestic labour. Never, in my opinion, has New Zealand gained such a valuable asset from the m.gratory movement as during the p:ist twelve .months. The nomination ,s\ stem, which is the sheet anchor of the present policy, has been strictly adhered to, and every effort has been made to foster schemes for obtaining chi id and juvenile migrants.” The report adds that 208 public and secondary schoolboys who arrived in ti e country were satisfactorily placed with suitable farmer's, and with very few exceptions were doing exceedingly well. The total number of arrivals from the United Kingdom, and Ireland during last year was 12,451, being 6"33 males and 5718 females. A total of 8924 were assisted by the Imperial and New Zealand Governments.
