HAWERA SCOTTISH SOCIETY.
CARNIVAL QUEEN CHOSEN. The usual monthly social for members of the -Scottish Society, .was held in the Foresters’ Hall last evening, and despite the inclemency of the weather there were over. 200. present .to enjoy the very fine programme submitted.. Mr W. G. Simpson, chieftain, was m the chair, and in his usual hearty manner welcomed the members. A selection on -the pipes by Pipers Bruce Henson and Dick Fletcher started the fun, after which the Society’s orchestra delighted the audience with a selection ot Scotch airs, and this was heartily encored.
Mr Simpson then explained the ,aijn and object of .the coming queen carnival and the position the, Society had taken in regard to putting its best foo forward in support of their queen to ensure lie? topping the poll. Mr Wpollett, who lias had considerable experience in running queen carnivals, has kindly expressed liis willingness to supervise, and explained liis plan of campaign. . , On a vote .being taken to .select , a candidate from the two young mdies nominated, Miss .Margaret _ Jvirk received a very decided majority., The very interesting programme which hacl been prepared was then submitted. Vocal items were rendered by Messrs Fade, Lamb, Harvey and West (quartette)) Mr and Mrs Cate (duet), and MessiA Fade, Lane and .Swan. A recitation lias given by Mrs Robb. Mr Swan also jjave a cornet solo. All the items were enjoyed. Supper was served and dancing was indulged in, bringing to a close a. very successful evening. _____
