HOUSING AT HAWERA.
COUNCIL SEEKS LOAN
DEPUTATION TO MINISTER
UNSUCCESSFUL MISSION
(nr telegraph:—press association.) WELLINGTON, Aug. 27. The Minister for Finance was interviewed by the . Mayor of Hawera, Mr. E A. Paeey, Mr. Elliott (town clerk), and Cr. \Y. G. Walkley with the object of getting finance for housing in the borough. The deputation pointed out that if the Government could arrange a State Advances Loan of £15,000 for the erection of workers’ dwellings on borough leases it would he a real bene, fit in relieving the house shortage. Of 69 sections taken up, a number had been surrendered owing to the lessees’ disappointment over delay in obtaining a State loan. The borough was willing to help tenants in their difficulty by allowing a rebate of rentals and a reduction to the original upset values, provided they could get money to build The Government had grant, ed the borough a loan, which had enabled the land to be roaded and subdivided, but the whole scheme would have been better left alone if financial assistance was to stop at this stage, the tenants being unable without State loans to utilise their sections. The borough had practically written off £I4OO through surrenders, but if the properties could be taken up it would result in a return to the borough of about £3 per section. The Hon. Mr. Nosworthy regretted that money was not available from the Advances Department. All he could advise was lor the applicants to get in their loan applications as early as possible, and. they would he attended to in strict rotation. He could not make any special arrangement for any particular set of applicants, and he regretted being unable to make any definite promise Regarding the future.
