OUT ON STRIKE.
QUEENSLAND RAILWAY MEN GENERAL STOPPAGE TD'-DAY. MEIN SHOW SOLID FRONT. BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT Received Aug. 27, 12.20 p.m. BRISBANE, Aug. 27. Alt Cairo, Townsville, Rockhampton and in all oeinjtrall districts, railway mem •struck at midnight. The Labour caucus, after lai prolonged meeting, decided that the Government would uphold the principle of arbitration, and that a conference of the unions concerned would he called. The president of the Queensland branch of the Railway Union said from evidence contained in the oilioial telegrams .received from every centre throughout the State, the unions were unanimous amd they were showing remarkable solidarity. He regarded it as evidence of a long suffering injustice occasioned to the workers since 1922. “We indicated to our branches throughout the State that we do not ‘desire them to completely cease work, hut we iare experiencing considerable difficulty .in balding them hack,” he ’said. We desire to receive a reply 'from the Parliamentary Labour Party before the rank and file cease work, and before .a general strike is declared. Ait a meeting of produce merchants it wais resolved that a protest he made to the Railway Department as the ’non-delivery cf farm produce was having a .serious effect on produce sales, resulting in heavy loss toi farmers. Announcements made at mass meetings at Ipswich .indicia,to that there will he practically ia general stoppage of work to-day. Masts meetings in other centres unanimously decided to .support the resolutions carried at Townsville. The Western mail train last night was cancelled.
