CRIME IN NEW ZEALAND.
DROP. IN SERIOUS OFFENCES. FROM OUR PARLIAMENTARY REPORTER. WELLINGTON, Aug. 20. The police repott presented by the Minister for Justice shows that although all classes of oflences increased last year by 906, there was a definite drop in more serious crime. The principal increases were in theft 232 cases, drunkenness 434 cases, being on licensed premises alter hours 3GG cases. I he principal decreases noted were thett I)v clerks or servants GG, burglary and housebreaking 2315, forgery 48. 'I lie 487 prosecutions of hotelkeepers show, ed a decrease of 14. The Commissioner of Police remarks that although drunkenness ligures increased, the total of 7470 is less than the average for past >ears, and no importance can he attached to the small increase. The police have been successful in obtaining many convictions against bookmakers, large and small. “But, as I have remarked .in a nrevious report, the ponce do not. get much assistance lrom the public, and have to continually adopt fresh tactics to obtain evidence. Ihere were 467 prosecutions and 386 convictions under. the Gaming Act last vear.
