RESCUED FROM AIOB. WOAIAN TRIED TO STAB .HIM. MELBOURNE, August 10. ■ Police at Bendigo with difficulty rescued Air. Lane central umpire a.t a football match on Saturday afternoon, when a hostile crowd of 150 rushed at him, threatening violence. Alien play terminated a section of the crowd swarmed across the arena, and as Air Lane attempted to. walk through the crowd he was hooted, blows were aimed at him, a woman tried to stab him with a hat-p.in, and several struck at him with umbjellas. Two hundred people surrounded his dressing-room. A squad of uniformed and plain-clothes police arrived, and though they cleared the grandstand enclosure 150 people waited outside the gate. AVhen Air. Lane appeared, .surrounded by police, they .made a wild rush at him, .and he was threatened by fists and . umbrellas, with young women prominent amongst the aggressors. With dii ff'ii.oul.ty the police escorted Mr. Lane to .a cab, and he was driven to safety, followed by .a hooting mob. YOUTHS ATTACKED Frank Forti.ngtow and two other youths were attacked by a gang of hoodlums in the subway alt Albert Park railway .station, following a football match. Though greatly outnumbered, the three youths fought their |Way through the tunnel, and Fortlngton collapsed outside as a result of a brutal kick on the head. Civilians beat off the gang, which dispersed with the approach of a policeman. Foitington revived subsequently. One youth, suspected of implication in the outrage, has been detained at the reformatory, am cl the police expect to bring a number o.f Tadts under 17 before the Children's! Court.
