TOKAORA.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) THE WEATHER. The unprecedented continuous cold south and south-east winds have a detrimental effect on all kinds of vegetable growth, grass included; yet for this season of the year the rainfall has been very moderate. The intervals of sunshine lately have been very limited, cloudy and overcast ruling'’. We have Iliad so far very low frosty nights, and those we have had have not been very severely felt as the warm, sea air soon permeates inland, dispelling .the keen sharp edge of the colder atmosphere. Owing to settlers having laid bv in the proper season abundance of “fodder l'or their stock, the herds do not feel the cold snap as if .they were facing it on .short rations. Then, too, the fences are growing apace, .affording good shelter from ail quarters. During the past few days, since the wind veered to north and -north-east, with mild showers, the paddocks have -been putting on a 'green sheen. OBITUARY. Last week two of the brightest and most promising pupils attending the Tokaora School passed away. Both attended school out Friday, August 14, and were apparently in their usual good health. Rosie Stewart, the only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. I 1 red Stewart, of Tokaora, became ill and despite the best medical attendance gradually sank, passing peacefully away on the following Tuesday evening. She was a very bright girl and was teaching her companions their respective parts for .the forthcoming children’s fancy dress ball, for which her mother was secretary: Owing to her demise the ball has been put off indefinitely. The funeral cortege was a, large one, many of her girl school mates fallowing carrying arum lilies .and other white flowers, the e*mjbleniis of purity aiiu innocence. The Rev. Mr. Monaghan officiated at the graveside. The sympatliy of a.ll the Tokaora «sefttler»s is extended to the bereaved parents, who have resided in our midst for many years. . The other pupil, Win. Hall, or Ketemarae Rload, passed peaceably away on the Wednesday night, the funeral taking place on Saturday alt the Howera Cemetery. The Rev. Mr. Evans officiated 'at the graveside. Much sympathy is felt by all around here with the bereaved parents in the foes of such a bright and promising lad, their only son too. OTHER PLACES.

On Sunday I had a run to Kaponga. Going .through, where the old toll-gate Used to be L missed the cheery greetings of Mr. Thos. Lloyd. , I never grudged'the two shillings tall tee to such "a cheerful receiver, for lie always aawe me the impression he was pleased for your patronage, hence his and his good iliady's popularity. Th© trip afforded enchanting; views of clean an<j well kept homesteads, prosperity and wealth being visible everywhere. I could appreciate the changed .scenery, for forty yeans ago the objective mark was the big rata tree whose roots extended for over a chain all round, and wa« located right in the centre of what is now the well kept, progressive town of Kaponga. All the rest of the country was standing bush, with a little cleared here and there. PERSONAL. Miss Nora Mills is spending her winter holidays with her parents here.
