NOTES ON THE SPORT
(By Telegraph.—Special le Star.) WELLINGTON, Aug. 22,
Conditions were not pleasant for the concluding day of the Fleet meeting, and naturally the attendance suffered. Consequent on much rain since Thursday, the race track was very- heavy. Eerie was responsible for a great feat m th e steeplechase, and emphasises the fact that she was unlucky in the Wellington and the Grand National Steeple chases. Peter Maxwell was the actual favourite for the Colorado Hurdles, but Gluement and Askari each were well supported. The leading division over the early stages were Gold Streak, Puketoi, Waimaua, and Lady Gay. The last-named ran to the front with six furlongs to go. Her immediate attendants were Gluement, Peter Maxwell, and Askari. Lady Gay almost fell at the last two jumps, and Peter Maxwell led Gluement over the final obstacle and went on to beat Gluement by a, couple-of lengths. Askari was a poor third. Muzzle lost his rider.
Nine of Spades was only paying about “evens” to win the Newark Hack Handicap. Ping Potoa was the only other runner supported to any extent-. The early leaders were Glaive, ifymestrason, and Nine of Spades. When the course proper was entered, Diogenes, with a fast run, took charge, and going on won easily from Kilorum, who outstayed Nine of Spades. Manuta i was fourth.
Of the eight starters for the Trenton Handicap, Olympic claimed the largest following, but Star Hanger carried within £4O of the favourite’s total. When the barrier rose Gardant immediately drew clear, but after going half a furlong Captain Wai took the lead, his nearest attendants at the home turn being Gardant and Starshell. In the run home Captain Wai ran on well to beat Olympic, with Anticipate third. ' Star it anger was fourth.
The Admiral’s Steeplechase drew an excellent field of twelve starters. O’: them Omaha, Firebliglit, Eerie, and Master Peter had the most supporters. From a good start Omaha led over the initial fence from Bonibrook, Tigerland. and Tuki. The next jump brought Tigerland down, and racing up the back Pmvhero went to the front from Bonibrook, Birkenella, Omaha. Peter A mans, and Tuki. At the stand Pmvhero still led from Bonibrook, Birkenella, Master Peter, Omaliu, and Peter Annins. Pacing up the hack stretch Birkenella headed Pmvhero, and Eerie, jumping like a stag, was cutting her field down. With half a mile to go Eerie took second place to Birkenella. At the last jump Birkenella was just in front of Eerie, but once over, Eerie passed Birkenella and, going on, won easily, while Birkenella beat First Line by a good margin. Dick was fourth and Peter A mans fifth.
Father O’Flynu was much better supported than Kilfaire for the Colorado Handicap, but Lady Ben and Passionate were almost as well supported. When th e tapes rose Kilfaire began smartly, but Father O’Flynn and Aeriform soon ran to the front, and this pair led Potoanui, Kilfaire and Kilfane into the straight. Once in. line for home. Potoanui, Kilfaire and Father o’’Flynn engaged in a great battle, which went to Kilfaire, while Potoanui just lie at- Father O’Flynn. Of the eight starters for the Washington Hurdles To Kawn had the best following, but General Carrington also carried a lot of money. Alter Te Kawa and Waimatao had led passing the stand, Waimatao went out to lead Captain Sarto and Lucullent
into the straight. Lucilent and Captain Sarto jumped the last fence together, but once over, Captain Sarto drew out to win well from Lncullent, with Prince Rufus and Waimatao next. The Officers’ Handicap proved a good betting race and a capital contest. When betting ceased' Nancy Leo was a good favourite, but Lucius and Kuhio each cam© in lor strong support. As usual, Orchid began very quickly, and ho Jed Nancy Lee and Some Red into the straight. When well down the running Nancy Lee took til© lead, but over the last few chains Tanadees, vigorously ridden by R. Bagby, out- her down to win. Lucius just beat Tinohari for third. The gathering concluded with the Broadway Handicap, for which scratchings reduced the field to nine runners. In a good pool Forgery was the choice of bettors, and was paying just over level money. Captain Wai was second favourite. First Acre, Forgery, and Ca'ptain Wai ran in close order over the first half-mile, hut while Forgery stopped badly over the last furlong, Captain Wai wore First Acre down. Gardenia, was a poor third' and Forgery fourth. RE-HANDICAPS FOR MABTOX. WELLINGTON, Aug. 23.
