JERSEY CATTLE.
HAWERA CLUB MEETS
SUCCESSFUL YEAR CONCLUDED
A successful year from a financial point of view was reported at the annual meeting of the Uawera. Jersey Cattle Club, which was held in the A. and P board loom yesterday. Mr. J. Pettigrew presided over a small at. tendance of members. ANN UAL REPORT.
The annual report stated that the affairs of the club were in a healthy state, a credit- of £99 7s Gd being shown. However, £67 14s 6d of this amount was trust money held on account of the C.O.R. and Hawera. Jersey Cattle Club stakes competitions. The committee had been disappointed with the response given to the C.O.R. stakes. Bv June 39 only" 12 heifers had been accented. During the past year the committee had decided to inaugurate the Hawera Jersey Cattle Chib stakes (open to members only) in order to cater for the smaller bleeders, and in order to encourage members to exhibit their stock. The semi-official testing conditions had therefore been eliminated from the competition for this reason. It was to he legretted that this competition had also met with a poor i espouse from the members. Subscriptions for the year were £BS. which was the second best year since the formation of the club and £l6 ahead of last year. The annual demonstration hacl been he’d at ■ Mr. Shoit’s property' by Air. H. E. B, Watson, to whom the best thanks of the members were due. The tattoo ear-mark could now be registered, and as a complete set had been purchased by the club, it was trusted that members would avail themselves of the privilege. The committee wished to express their thanks to the ladies who had arranged the catering for the demonstration. to the press, and to all who had assisted the club in any way dur- | ing the past year. The president, in moving the adoption of the annual report and balancesheet, said that while the club had ■•ad a successful year from one point of view there had not been the enthusiasm displayed by members that they would have liked to have seen. The healthy state of the finances reflected credit on the sec retail' (Mr. R. McrCav), who had put in very good work and had spent much time in canvassing. Mr. A. Pettigrew seconded, and the motion adopting the report and bal-ance-sheet was then passed. TARANAKI COUNCIL. A recommendation from the executive that the club resign from the Taranaki Provincial Council was confinned. The president mentioned that for some time the club members had been of trie opinion that they' were getting no benefit from the Provincial Council. There was also the expense of a subscription and the cost of delegates travelling. ELECTION OF OFFICERS. Officers for the ensuing year were ejected as follow: President, Air. J. Pettigrew; vice-piesident, Air. F. Hos. kin; executive, Alessrs McV. Nowell, J. Short, \V. Pollock, A. Simons, and H. Wren. Air. H. A. Lennon was reappointed auditor. FIELD DAY ATTENDANCES. The apathy displayed of latte towards the field days arranged by the eiub wars mentioned by the chairman. Air. Pollock thought it would do no bairm if the climb were to drop the don no net iat ions and allow the tiemon- •: tit’Xoiis to work in the areas, where Jersey breeders were nub numerous. Air. R. J. Li un thought it would be a mistake lor the club to drop the uiamomst, rations. LTiey could jammgie to hold them, on the outskirts of theii district, instead of holding them close in to Hawera. The chairman agreed that the field days should not be dropped. Air. F. Hoi-kui sard it appeared to him that there were too many demon--itrabionis being held in the one district. If three or lour of the clubs weie to combine in running one field day better results would be obtained and one chub’s aicuiviiti.es would not clash with those of another. He had spoken to Air. Watson in connection with the matter, and that gentleman suggested that they get turilior afield than hiherto. The chairman said that the value of the demonstrations was not so much in the number of bleeders present, but In the number of other farmers who attended. Opuuake, Ararata, or some, place south of Hawera. were suggested as suitable places for tire holding of the next demonstration, but the matter was finally left in the hands of the executive. SEMI-OFFICIAL TESTING. Mr. A. Pettigrew asked if there* was any definite move in the direction of the New Zealand Council subsidising semi-official testing. Air. Linn replied that the council had got the money, but it, did not seem to be spending any of it. There was talk of building new offices, but the council seemed to be keen to hang on to its money. THANKS TO AIR, LINN. A vote of thanks was accorded All. Liimi for attending. Mr. Linn in reply said that since having this di-trie,l. he had been winking mainly amongst the grade .Jerseys in the New Plymouth district. There was a strong movement afoot there to improve the grades, and this was a good thing for the pedigree breeders, as it meant a demand lor pedigree bulls. The meeting concluded with votes of thanks to the chair and to the press.
