THE BLACKBERRY PEST.

ATTITUDE OF MINISTER. Tt is not proposed to make immediate grants for the clearing of blackberry on Crown, lands or soldiers’ holdings, stated the Minister for Lands, Hon. A. D. McLeod, in, answer to a question by Mr Ci. McKay (Hawke’s Bay). In support of his question Mr McKay stated that the settlers in most cases had no money available for this purpose, and the blackberry was spreading at an alarming rate. The Government should give immediate assistance and thus prevent settlers from being forced to leave their farms at ‘ a consequent serious loss to the State.

The Minister said- the Department of Agriculture offered a bonus of £IO,OOO for an efficient, practical and economical method of exterminating blackberry and had two experimental plots at Wairoa under observation. It was not proj>osod to make grants for the clearing of blackberry on Crown leases or soldiers’ holdings.
