APPEAL FOR ENGLISHMEN
OBJECTIONS TO AUSTRALIANS. BY CABLE—PBESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGH'J (Received Aug. 20, 12.15 p.m.) MELBOURNE, Aug. 20. The council of the Victorian branch of the Royal Colonial Institute has issued a statement declaring that the proposal that future State Governors should be Australians would definitely weaken the ties between the various parts of the Empire and so weaken it as a whole. It adds that men with a great knowledge of international affairs are necessary, and under certain conditions, if Australians held the position, it might involve Australia m serious trouble.

Received Aug. 20, 1.30 p.m. LONDON, Aug. 19. The Colonial Office has not considered the appointment of successors to Lord Stradbrooke (Victoria) and Lieutenant-Colonel Sir M. Nathan (Queensland), pending the return ot Mr. L. C. M. S. Amery, who is now on holiday, when the Victorian / and Queensland Governments will Ire 1 consulted. No notice has 'been re~*r‘ ceived regarding State Governorships, bnt the imperial policy has not been changed since the going of the late Lord Milner, who recognised the State rights in the matter of gubernatorial appointments, but strongly, objected to the various States pursuing different methods. —Aus.-N.Z.
