INTERNATIONAL TRIALS.. 3 Y CABLE—raESS ASSOCIATION- -COI?HEIGHT. LONDON, Aug. 18. The Australians, Williams, Stratford and Gregory, did well on the first day' of the great international motor-cycle trial. Eighty-seven competitors started froth Southampton on. a journey of 1080 miles through the West of England and Wales. The first day’s route extended to 20i) miles over wme of the difficult roads wild hills, finishing at Taunton. The official return shave not been 'announced, but so far England and Australia have no failures, while .Germany', Norway and Holland all failed on at least one hill. The chief is between national teams, driving machines manufactured in their own country, for the international trophy, which was won yesterday by England from Belgium wild Germany, which this year were .England’s only' challengers. Germany' was determined to -intake every effort to wrest the trophy in the interests of trade competition. Her representatives, •however, made a poor shewing. The <lay’« most difficult ascent was at- Drav■oott, where a. linle and a-half Iras a gradient of from one in seven, to one in four. Here -two out of the three German challengens were beaten, and only one German made a clean ascent, while all the English, and Australian's climbed .successfully, including three women.
The trial comprises, a nuruber of other competitions, including the International Silver Vase far teams driving motor-cycles manufactured in any country, and the News of the World trophy for the British motor-cycling championship, in both of which the Australians hare entered.
