HAWERA BOROUGH COUNCIL.
ORDINARY MEETING. There were present at. the monthly meeting- of the Hawerii Borough Council, held last, night: His Worship the Mayor (Mr E. A. Paeev), Crs. A. Reid, W. Butler, W. G. Walkiey, J. M. Townsend, E. Morrissey, H. W. .Lester, W. Gilbert, W. Page and W. G. Strange. The town- clerk (Mr 11. S. Elliott,) was also present. COMMITTEE MEETINGS.
Reports of various committee meetings were read and considered. General.—Matters dealt with included the sending of a deputation consisting of the Mayor, Cr Walkiey and the town clerk to wait on the Minister for Finance and Superintendent of the State Advances Office with a view to securing the sum of £15,000 for lending for the erection of dwellings- for workers on sub-section 37, I-lawera; that the matter, of arrears of rent on sub-section 37 be referred to the Finance Committee; that, the Electric. Light Company proceed with erection of lamps in Nolantown in accordance with its offer; that transfer of license of lodging house be approved; that license for hoarding be granted to the Taranaki Provincial Council, subject to the usual conditions; that the Minister and member for district be urged to support a motion that motor drivers’ licenses must be obtained from local body in whose district applicant is resident permanently; that the Council agree that regulations controlling storage and use of cinema film be accepted as compliance with by-law relating to places of public entertainment regarding the projection room of a picture, theatre; that the town clerk write to the Health Department in regard to additional provisions re milk vendors and licenses; that estimates as submitted (inclusive of the following additional amounts, viz., cemetery approach and gates £IOO, cost of commission re Nolantown £37, work in Noinntown £l5O, new lamps and alterations, Nolantown, £BB, typewriter £3O, Albion street paths, etc., £3OO, Regent street Hank £2BO, Victoria, street flank £llO, Grey street (part) £OO, contribution Egmont National Park £2S, taxi ’phone, box £35; total £1257) be brought down for the current year; that the usual method of levying rates, viz., both general and water, be adopted.
Library-—That Miss C. S. Huggins be appointed assistant librarian; that the Mayor, Miss Newland and Crs Strange and Lester report at a later date on the library. WORK IN THE BOROUGH. Tile engineer reported as follows: Work during the winter months! is confined almost, entirely to ordinary maintenance; there, is. consequently, little to report upon. The bitumen, has arrived from tlie British Imperial Oil Co., 770 dirums iu all. Each drum is being weighed, to make certain of the total quantity, the material being costly. The pipe bridge over the Wningongoro has been cleaned and coated carefully with bitumestie paint. The bitumen tanks have been cleaned out. The deposit of hard carbon, was slight this season, partly due to the use of* lignite coals during the last season. Condition of tanks is good. The. new arrangement proved very efficient and reliable during last season’s work.
Kerb and channel work in Albion street will now be commenced. BOROUGH INSPECTOR. The report of the. borough inspector stated that, house inspection had been carried out; that sixteen drivers had been examined and passed; that shofv week traffic and also traffic at the Wel-lington-Taranalci match had been excellent. LIBRARY. The librarian (Miss M. F. Newland) reported that twenty members left during the month and twelve new ones joined; there are still about 500 on the list; 70 new books were bought, including twelve of general literature; Miss Stevens (assistant) left on the 31st after putting in two years of conscientious work. She said she thoroughly appreciated the spirit in which Miss Stevens entered. into all peratnients of the library work, and parted with her with feelings of regret. GENERAL.
In reply to a request from the committee of the W.E.A.,, H'awera, it was agreed to receive a deputation at the next ordinary meeting. It was agreed that, during the absence on leave of the town clerk, Mr J, Neilsen be empowered to operate on the banking account in his stead. Cr Townsend reported that the matter of shrubs for King Edward Park and the East End Park had been left to the Parks and Reserves Committee, but that an opportunity presenting itself to secure these plants lie had, after consulting Cr Morrissey, made the purchase. His action was confirmed. In regard to a proposed participating superannuation scheme, it was resolved that further information be secured dealing with boroughs' about the size of Hawera. The Finance Committee will consider and report on the question. A letter was received from the borough solicitor (Mr Ri D. Welsh) in connection with the'proposed lowering of rents on the reserve at the western end of High street. He suggested, a conference with the Mayor and the town clerk to go thoroughly into the matter. 'flic explanation of Mr S. .J. Suisted in regard to driving horses in public streets and his apology were accepted. A circular Avas received from the Minister of Internal Affairs dealing with regulations under the Motor Vehicles Act, which the Council avus asked to consider. The. matter Avas left to the By-laws Committee Avitli power to act. Permission Avas granted to 11. J. EdAvards to erect a worksho-p under usual conditions, provided that plumbing is carried out properly.
