A vote of sympathy with the relatives of Air W. Slattery* iff Auroa, whose death occurred on Wednesday, was passed at yesterday’s meeting of the W a incite West County Council, the council standing in silence. Two Americans from aboard the men-o’-war at present visiting New Zealand are enjoying a short stay in Hawera the guests of Air L. O. Hooker. They are Petty Officer (2nd class), G. A. Carroll, official photographer of the American Fleet, and Private (Ist class) H. Lee, Ist U.S.AI.C. The photographer who has had considerab’e experience with a movie camera at Hollywood, intends to take a seriesof“stills” of Alt. Egmont and various beauty spots or the district.

A London correspondent writes that Mr AY. Cranston Bell, who spent several years in New Zealand and who has been in England for the last- 13 months, has been registered as an external matriculated student of the London University after passing the moderator’s examination. His New Zealand matriculation was not accepted here. Air Bell intends to take the arts course, and at present he is studying for the inter-arts in English, Latin, Greek and Logic. For three years he was resident at Hawera, and then went to Auckland. ATr Bell expects to be m England for at least five years. He is a member of his college football team and also is a lawn tennis player.

On the eve of his leaving for an extended trip to Australia, Mr F. W. Sutton was met by members of the .staff of tile firm and presented with a line travelling rug. In making the presentation, Air C'. Best, the oldest member, stressed the good fee'ing existing between the proprietors and the staff, and on their behalf wished him and Mrs Sutton bon voyage / and the .*>ni«st and pleasantest of times on their trip. Several other members of the staff siioke endorsing Mr Best’s remarks, and Air Sutton’s health was toasted enthusiastically. Air Sutton ■eplied in happy vein, thanking the ft. r iff most cordially for their kind'y exoressions of good will and for their handsome and most useful present. Air and Mrs Sutton leave by mail train toil igiit for Auckland en route for Svdney. After visiting Sydney, the Blue Afountains and .Teno'an Caves, they will probably go on to Alelbournc and Adelaide.
