(By Telegraph.—Special to Star.) CHRISTCHURCH, Aug. 12
The Metropolitan Trotting Club opened its meeting to-day under dry but very cold climatic conditions. l)e- ----■ j tc tin’s, the attendance was good for an “off day.” A lot of work by motor cars had the effect gif drying the clay track, which was quite fast. For tlie Introductory Handicap, the ex-North Islander, Herbilwyn, was a very hot order, and after going to a break in the first furlong, he settled down and just failed to beat the s eoond favourite, Burnie. King Dillon was paying less than level money in the Electric Handicap, but after having every chance- lie was beaten into third place, the winner be'ny Whetu, who paced a good mile, but mav have been lucky to beat Darknite. Tlie chief race, the August Handicap was somewhat unsatisfactory, as Billy ■Sea. the favourite, fell and Away came down oil top of him. The gear on Gleni s went wrong, and thus another wellbacked candidate wa s put out of action. After Hypo had led most of the jourrev, Logan Lou then took charge, and after a good set-to, beat Loganwood, with Hypo an indifferent third. Roicole, from tlie successful Keunerley stable, was looked on as unbeatable for The Trial, and so it proved, for lie made an exhibition of his opponents. He- is a most promising gelding. Although he went very patchy in his preliminary, Swiftbine, from the Tomkinson establishment, was a very warm favourite for the Stewards, but at no stage did lie flatter his army of supporters. The Taranaki-owned Rostrevor wa s rushed to the front very early, and he gave a very even display, hut -was unlucky enough to meet a good sort in Lazarus, which just boat .Rostrevor. Taurekareka was paying less than level money to win tlie Queen Mary Handicap, but at tlie finish lie went down bv a narrow margin to Prince Pointer, who was also a well - hacked candidate. Taurekareka may get on the winning list soon. Talaro was a good favourite for the So’wyn Handicap, but, like some of the other well-hacked ones, lie suffered a narrow defeat h.v Black Admiral. Talero is promising and was lunlucky to-day. Harold Bunvood was pacing well two l’ur'ongs from home, but went- to a bad break. The sport concluded with the International Handiacp, for which event that fine horse Great Bingen, had a big following. He began slowly, and made up very little leeway over the first hn r f of the journey, hut oyer the last part he literally flew, hut failed bv a small margin to catch Partner and Boiln.v Logan, which finished together. 'Hie winner paid over a third of a century.
