FEILDING v. HAWERA

FEEDING WINS ON CALL OF TIME.

The game played at Hawera this mornixig between Hawera Technical High School and Feilding Agricultural High School was' very fast and* close, it being altogether a- fine exhibition of Rugby. -t The opening stage of the game was marked by loose play until Hahiri made a splendid run and was tackled by Brain well in Feilding’s 25. < The play worked back towards Hawera’s territory, and after a good rush was stopped by Jordan right under the goal. Feilding immediately attacked again, but the ball went out close to the touch line. -One of the Feilding players took a mark, which failed, but a try taken off the kick was disallowed. Then Hawera kicked and rushed downfield, and Vinten* almost got across. Feilding cleared, but. Hawera, playing well, returned to the attack, and again Standish, following up fast, just failed to secure a try. Play went' up and downfied in fast rushes. Hawera continued to press, and a great struggle took place on the line. Hope relived with a penalty kick, but once again Hawera nearly got across, Tutawa being taken on the line. Then Feilding got away, and good playby Hope, Salter and Ball took play to Hawera’s 25'. They continued to open up play, but from- a faulty pass Gower intercepted behind half-way, and ran clean away to' score- a brilliant try. Cheevers’ •'>' kick failed. Hawera 3, Feilding 0. * * Feilding wept up-field from the kickout, and nice passing work took play to the line. Tutawa and Cheevers cleared and play centred. Shortly after a loose rush went through the opposing' defence and Standish breaking away after a nice run passed to Church'' who got clear away and scored in a good position. Cheevers goaled: Hawera, 8; Feilding, 0. Feilding by. great dashes attacked stxongly, Bali putting in capital work. A loose* rush took play right to the line where it looked very dangerous but Walshe coming round saved. Passing in. capital style Feilding made the pace hot and attacked strongly. Their pa«s_ ing rushes .failed, however, owing to the excellent tackling of the Hawera backs and their good* kicking.'' Then Hawera went down field to the opposing 25 and the ball going out, halftime was called.

Feilding went away with, a great rush at the opening, but Hawera’s defence was'sound. A brilliant passing rush was opened by Walshe, who put in a nice run and sent on to his backs, and the ball, went along the line and right to Folding’s 25. It was a pretty movement. Good defence spoiled a great effort, and Feilding with - loose rushes went down.field and looked likely to score, but Bishop cam© across and saved in great style. Keening up the pressure, Feilding got on a loose rush, and going on secured from a scrum near the line, and a nice dash enabled Waldin to score a good try. The kick failed. Hawera 8, Feilding 3. After a period of even play Feilding hacks got away, and a brilliant rush took play to Hawera’s 25, where play was fast and open. Feilding continued to open up play, and went down to the Hawera line and twice almost got over. A free kick to Feilding gave them an opening, and the kick almost succeeded. Hawera forced. Cheevers made a fine dash friun the kick-out ; and Hawera backs followed it up with a passing rush. Nicholas was collared at the 25 flag, and Feilding retaliated with a, loose forward rush, and play centred. Feilding backs once more got _ away, but Jordan' saved, and from a line-out a lucky kick went put almost on Hawera’s line and Hawera forced. In a loose rush Jordan failed to take, and Waldin, following up fast, fell over the line and scored. "Fade’s kick failed. Hawera 8, Feilding 6.

Play was 1 tip and downfield; in fine loo«e rushes, and Hawera. went upfield almost to the line. The hall came out and all the hacks, handling well, a score looked likey, but Feilding’s defence stood the test. Just- after Standish. intercepting brilliantly, put in a great run and sent the ball on to Church, who just on the line passed to Young, and the latter scored a capital try. Cheevers’ kick just failed. Hawera 11. Feilding 6. Feilding attacked hotly from the kick-out. and Hawera’s defence was sorely tested! Good kicking saved them, Wnlshe and Nicholas being prominent. Then a brilliant loose rush by Hawera forwards went clean through, and they just missed a score; Feilding forced. Play thenceforward was verv fast, and went un and downfield. Walshe. trying the blind side, made a nice dash, and sent it out to Jordan, who was forced out. Feilding returned to the attack, and a fine forward rush took play to the line. From a scrum the hall came out to Hope, who made a run and s'o’-ed near the nornw, The kick failed. Hawera 11, Fed ding 9. With- onlv n few minutes to go both sides strove their utmost. Feilding. »’ded l»v the wind, pressed hard, but Ron-ora’s defence stood the test until Feilding backs got away, and after a o-ood messing rush went right to the line. Woods, securing from a. scramble, .••out nv.->v to snore iust, on call of time. The kick failed and the whistle went, leaving Feilding a point ahead after an excellent display of football by both teams. Mr H. Whittington was referee.

CENTRAL (14) Y. SOUTHERN (3)

The Central Thursday reps, were too good for the Southern Wednesday reps, in a match played as a curtain-raiser for the Itangitikei game. Central were the first to attack, Grubb, at half, sending the ball down to McCullough, who was tackled. Forward play soon placed Central in a handy position, and a movement among the backs resulted an McCullough getting the leather on the 25 and dashing across. Kivell s kick failed. Central again pressed, and atter throwing the ball about became dangerous when Ivivell worked the dummy and got close to the- scoi mg ••ine. * The Southerners rallied when Loader improved their position by coy©riim a lot of ground down the touchliner A minute 'later Central were licnalised for off-side play, and from well outside the twenty-five Loader kicked'a. pretty 'goal. Central returned to the attack, and piled oiv the line until Brooking sent out to Fowler to McCullough. who scored. Brooker’s kick failed. Central G v. Southern 3. Fow’cr had an unsuccessful shot at goal from sc fiee kick. Play settled m midfield for a few minutes until lidswell marked. Hi s kick at goal however was unsuccessful. Central dribbled down towards the scoring line, a second line-out seeing the hall sent in from the corner. The Southerners, however, cleared; Central still pressed, and Cathro and McCullough passed in and out to the corner where a touch-m----goal was given. Fast following up enabled Fowler to nick up and transfer fo McCullough, who scored. Fowler’s kick failed. Central 9, Southern 3. Tho Southern forwards, led by Notman, attacked with a dribbling rush, but a toucb-in-goal residtsd. From the kick from the twenty-five Central carried 'lav close to the scoring line, Grubb, Brooker and Cathro indulging m a oassing movement. No score resulted, and the spell ended Central 9, Southern 3.

When pliay resumed the Southern for. wards, amongst whom Tidswell was conspicuous, carried play to the goal-line, but they fumbled several passes and Central "cleared to the touch-line. The Central forwards then got going and dribbled the ball over the twenty-five line. A kick over the scoring line was followed up by Neil, hut a force resulted. Central came again and Golding secured in front of the goal and passed wildly out to the wing. McCullough nicked ui> but lost the ball as he dived across the line. Grubb completely fooled the opposition when he worked the dummy and slipped through the tight, to score under the goal. Grubb’s kick added the major points. Central 14, Southern 3. Southern attacked,' E. Burke following up a. kick across the scoring line, which the Central fullback, Mount, cleared. Garrett in. auguratod a passing movement in front of .the visitors’ goal, hut the defence could not be penetrated. Play hung in midneVl and continued on in a rather ragged display until the final whistle blow. Mr. J- Munro was referee.
