AMATEUR ATHLETICS.
PROPOSED AMERICAN VISIT. . HAWERA’S GU AR ANTEE. A request for a £SO guarantee for an appearance in Hawera. of Jackson Scholz, the American world champion •sprinter, together with the best American middle distance runner available, and two crack Australian cyclists,, providing, of course, that the invitation of the New Zealand Council of the Amateur Athletic Association i s accepted, was considered by the committee of the Hawera Amateur Athletic Club last evening. The unanimous wish of the meeting was that a visit to Hawera should be arranged, it being pointed out that the visit of 4i world’s champion of the calibre of Scholz would be even a greater attraction than the recent, visit of the. Australians. The question for consideration, however, was that of the terms of the guarantee asked for by the New Zealand Council. It was agreed that it did not seem lair that a town such as Hawera, with a population of 5000, should be asked for the same guarantee as Wanganui, with a population of 25,000. Whether or not the club’s liability would stop at the £SO guarantee was deemed to he not quite clear from the council’s letter, and .it was finally left with the president (Mr A. Grant) and secretary (Mr G. H. Weir) to wait on Mr A. E. Gorton, who would be leaving for Wellington on 'Wednesday, and request him to approach the council, seeking the most favourable terms possible. ' The Hawera. Dressing Shed Committee's request for the payment of a levy of £2 for the maintenance of the shed was agreed to. The president announced that the incorporation of the club was now comolcte. —It was decided to write thankug Mr W. N. Matthew* (recently a member of the firm of Messrs Spra.tt and Matthews) for his gratuitious services in the matter. The Taroaiiki Rugby Union wrote, thanking the chib for its .share in entertaining the Wellington representative football team recently in Hawera.
Mr_A. E. Burgess was appointed the club’s delegate to the band carnival committee.
A vote of thanks was accorded Mr R. T. Bullock for the loan of his motor ! orrv and a driver on the occasion of the club’s cycle road races. The secretary mentioned that the club’s dances bad up to date resulted in i profit of £lO 9s. and .there was still another dance to ho hold. It was stated That, Mr E. Y. Dunbar had expressed his intention of donating a. cup, to be .awarded for any event the club desired. Appreciation of Air Dunbar's generosity was expressed.
