DESTROYING WILD PIGS.
THE GOVERNMENT SUBSIDY. LARGER, AMOUNT INADVISABLE. The Government does not care to give unduly -large rewards, lor the destruction oi’ wild pigs, lestl a new clasvs of pig farming -should grow up. .In the House of Representatives Mr. R. Masters (Stratford) raised a complaint about the small vote (£250) for the destruction of wild pigs. He remarked that £l-150 was provided for destroying keiats in the South Island. The Minister for tamds, Hon. A. ,D. MoLeod: There are two items under other departments. It is l’or Grown lands. Mr. Masters: What is the total F Mr. McLeod: £650. Mr. Masters declared that that sum was absurdly tonal I. Even if the vote applied only to Grown lands, any one district could absorb the whole of it. Later Mr. McLeod -said the Forestry, Aigi'ic-ultu.raL -antli Landsi Depairtments wore all contributing various gums lor this purpose. He had heard one member say that 40 pigs, a day had been kuled on one farm. Wit-h the subsidy of Is a snout given by the Government they woukl have farmers cultivating pig.* if they could average £2 a day by killing them. If the Government gave -subsidies for the killing of pigs on private -property where woukl the departments stopF Tho Government might as well give subsidies toward the extermination of rabbits mud noxious wee-dis on private property.
