interesting court case. (by TEtEGRAPH— PEERS ASSOCIATION WANGANUI, August 10. Maoris displayed considerable interest In court proceedings whe n Wharekurafcimoti proceeded against H. M. Downs, manager of the Ratana Bank, that Son July 10, 1924, Downs, by means of a wise pretence, to wit, a statement that the informant was entitled to receive 980 from the Ratana Bank in return or an investment of £5, did procure die £5, which he delivered to the said Downs as representing the bank. The informant stated that he deposited £5 with Downs and the secretary at the bank, aiid received 80 coupons, vhieh indicated that they were worth 01 each. He was told that if he paid In £5 he would receieve a loan of £BO, and made two applications for the ban, but without success. On the first occasion lie was told that there was no money. in the bank, and on the second Downs told him that the coupons were not worth £l. The case is proceeding.
