HAWERA SITTING. (Before Air J. S. Barton, S.M.) A. sitting of the Alagistrate’s Court was held in Hawera this morning by .Mr J. S. Barton, S.AI. . Judgment for the plaintiff was given hv default in each of the following »n----defended civil cases: AY. Jury and Co v. C. Glceson, claim £lO 7s lOd and £2 14s costs; E. J. Bassett v. R. Gardiner and Sons, £3O Os 8d and £4 Is 5d costs; A. Linkhorn v. F. A. Jones, £4 10s lOd and £1 3s 6d costs; H. G. Brodie v. H. C. Jyoveday, £5 6s 8d and £1 12s 6d costs; Hawera Timber and Joinery Co. v. AI. A. Ryan, £l/8 6s od and £8 4s costs; Hugh Rodger v. C. Kelly, costs only, £2 6s 6d.

J UDGAIENT SUMMONSES. Jane Grant v. J. A. Goodson, £3l 12s 6d and costs £1 11s 6d; order for payment bv September 3. in default 35 davs in gaol. E. Dickinson v. H. Barratt, £l2 8s Od and costs £1 Is; ordered to pay amount forthwith, in deiault 14 days ; C. Kneehone v. V. Pullan, £4 14s ; order made for payment at once, in default live days in Auckland prison. ELTHAM SITTING. BREACHES OF LICENSING LAWS. The fortnightly sitting of the Magistrate’s Court at Eit ham was held yesterday, Mr A. M. Mowlein, S.M., presiding. Hoy Leslie and David Mclntyre, who did, not appear, were charged with being on the licensed premises of the Dominion Hotel, Kaponga, without lawful excuse after hours. Constable J. O’Donoghue said that at about- 9.20 p.m. on July 11 he found Leslie at the back door of the hotel talking to the licensee. On being questioned Leslie had said he had some important business to transact with the licensee, but could not divulge it to witness. The licensee had informed witness that Leslie had asked for a flask of whisky, but the licensee had refused to supply him. Deferring to Mclntyre, Constable O’Donoghue said he had l>een waiting by a car in the yard, and had been unable to account for his presence there. . Apparently he was waiting for the other man to obtain the flask. Both defendants were convicted and fined £1 and costs. BY-LAW CASE. Edgar Carlson, farmer, Mangatoki, was charged with failing to comply with an order served by the Eltham County Council requiring him to cut back overhanging hedges to the boundary' of his section. Air Weir, who appeared- for the County Council, stated that since the oroceedings had been instigated defendant had commenced cutting the hedge. He asked that an order he made for costs only.

Defendant was convicted and discharged. an order bging made for costs amounting to 7s.
