Several days previously a, young man arrived in Sydney from New Zealand, with a substantial amount of capital. It is luither alleged that lie represented himself aw a man of means, and that, in order to entice the New Zealander to take a share in one of his farms, he put what seemed a very reasonable proposition to him, and said that ioi every £lO the visitor put into the farm, lie, the owner, would put in £100; further, his statements were substantiated by two others. The Now Zealander immediately subscribed £lO and promised to. take further shares. Arrangements were made, and the New Zealander then visited the detective oilice, where lie had a conversation with Superintendent Mankey. As a result of this conversation Detectivo-sergeanils Kennedy and \\ atk'jms went to George Street and waited outside the head oltioo ol the A.B.C. Rank. Soon aliterwards the New Zealander emerged from, the bank with tinalleged owner. The detective immediately arrested the latter. I he' detectives then hurried to Bondi in a police car, and there saw two men seated beneath a palm tree on the* beach. When, they saw the police one ol them, ran, away at- a, last- pace ami entered a. house near the beach. Tic was followed by Kennedy, who succeeded in overtaking him. A struggle ensued, in. which many 'blows were .struck. Soon, however, the detective over-powered the man and arrested him and .succeeded in getting liim> into the car. ,Jii,st then the other man made an attempt to escape. He ran down oil to Bondi Beach, but was overtaken by Detective-sergeant Waitkin.s after a chase for about 300 yards. The three arrested men. were then conveyed to the Central Police .Station, where they were charged with conspiring to cheat the New Zealander.
