BOROUGH COUNCIL. A special meeting of the Patea Borough Council was held on Monday night for the purpose of receiving and passing the balance-sheet. His Worshp the Alayor presided. A .letter was received from the Audi-tor-General with reference to two “tags,” and after discussion a motion was passed accepting the balance-sheet as .received from the Auditor-General, and that it bo printed. ORDINARY MEETING. At the conclusion of the special meeting, the ordinary monthly meeting was held. An invitation was received from the Fate a Fire Brigade to attend its annual meeting, to lie held on August 6.—Accepted. A letter was received from Air A. C. Vincent, with reference to the completion of his contract for felling and removing the pine trees in Scotland Street, and pointing out that .if he were compelled to finish hi s contract forthwith, the heavy carting over the road while it was in its present state would do great damage His Worship said he had met Yincent on the job, and had advised him to put his case in writing before the council. About half of the work had been done, and the contractor was quite willing to. put a man on to make the road passable. It was quite out of the question to think of putting the grader on the road at present. Cr. Thomson thought that all the suggestions made hv Vincent were entirely in liis favour, and thought that something should be done for the council’s side. He wa s in favour of allowing the contractor, say. two months, and then require the job to he finished. Tho Alayor said the job was a far naper one than the council ever thought when the contract was let. Cr. Jones said that Vincent took the job on with full knowledge of its extent, and lie felt that the council was being imposed upon, and the contractor should be called on to complete tlm work at the earliest moment. Ho was not in favour of any further extension of time being granted. . ' Cr. Christensen said lie agreed with Cr. Jones to a certain extent, but lie J ill not believe in coining down too hard on a returned so'dier, and, further, lie. thought the contractor was entitled to the council’s sympathy lor the position lie was in. ...
His Worship said lie believed in givng a returned -soldier every chance, but at tho same time the council wanted the read left in a reasonable state before the contractor left it. Cr. Christensen moved that the contractor he granted till April 30, 1926, to complete is contract. —Carried. The Public Trustee wrote, stating that the Cadnian Estate did not intend taking a renewal of the lease of certain property in the-Borough.—Resoived to call tenders for a- seven years’ lease ol ho property, the lessee to have the right to cut down and remove all pine trees oil the place, with the exception of a belt two-deep around the property. , ,
The Department of Health wrote with reference to the failure of the owner of a certain building, some time ago condemned, to have sanio pulled down. — Resolved to draw the owner’s attention to the matter. The following recommendations for
tho General Purposes Committee were adopted :—That the anonymous letter ned “Health,” be not received ; that the charge for extraordinary water supply to the District High School he reduced to £i> .for the current year ; that Mr Len Campbell he thanked for his offer to renovate the Town Hall seats when tenders for the same were beyond the council’s means, and that he be ire’eased from bis undertaking, as requested in bis letter to -the council; and that M,r F.
