MAN THE SHIPS
SEAMEN ACCEPT AGREEMENT
RESUMPTION OF WORK
EXPECTED TO-MORROW. BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT. (Received Aug. 5, 11.15 a.m.) MELBOURNE, Aug. 5. The shipping agreement has now been accepted by all branches of the Seamen’s Union. Probably the seamen will offer their services in a body on Thursday afternoon. Union officials denied the truth of the message from Fremantle to the effect that the branch there accepted the agreement with the exception of one clause.
VOLUNTEER LABOUR
WHAT TO DO WITH IT
A DIFFICULT POINT
(Received Aug. 5, 11.15 a.m.) SYDNEY, Aug. 5
Another meeting of the Seamen’s Union is to be held this morning to fix the date for the resumption of work. The point engaging attention is the position of the volunteer labour engaged during the strike to man the vessels and to handle cargo ashore. It is likely that these hands may have to be dispensed with in order that seamen and watersiders may offer for engagement. The Newcastle and Hunter River Company has employed volunteer labour since the beginning of the year.
