SOLD WATERED MILK. (BY TKLEGUAVH. PRESS ASSOCIATION.) CHRSTCHURCH, Aug. 3. At Rangiora, George H. Wood, a dairyman, was fined £lO and costs for vending milk with. 25 per cent, water added. UNAUTHORISED TREATMENT. DUNEDIN, Aug. 3. At the Police Court to-day William Michael Wilkinson, who described himself as a. specialist, was charged that “he did undertake treatment for payment of venereal disease.’’- The evidence showed that a prisoner in' gaol had been treated. The Magistrate inflicted a fine of £0 and costs. FORGERY AND THEFT. WELLINGTON, Aug. 3. George William Thorpe was found guilty to-day of forgery and the theft of moneys paid for furniture during the time lie was manager of the firm of C. and W. Price.
Thorpe is a well-known business man in Nelson and Wellington* and bad occupied various responsible positions. For some years lie was director of an auctioneering company, acting as manager. He purchased various lots of furniture, paying cash in the majority of cases. lie produced, a forged receipt for a larger amount, receiving this amount from the firm and pocketing the difference. It was claimed that lie was entitled to do this, but. he failed to satisfactorily explain the fact that in the majority of the cases forged signatures had been placed on the receipts produced. He will be sentenced to-morrow.
BREAKING AND ENTERING. DUNEDIN, Aug. 3. A young man named David Baden Powell was charged' in the Magistrate’s Court to-day on three informations with breaking and entering dwellings by day. Chief Detective Lewis, who prosecuted, said that the youth might be adequately dealt with on the present occasion oil all the offences said to be committed by him but for the fact that stolen property to the value of £3OO or £4OO had been broken up by the accused, who had kept about 100 loose gems and thrown away the gold rings from which he had removed them. The police here would have difficulty in allocating the stolen gems, as only the accused could point out the houses from which he had stolen them. The accused made a signed/ statement, in whieh lie said he- had left his home in Thames some time ago, and had not communicated with his parents since. He first went to Hamilton, where lie stayed for three days. From there he went to Auckland, where he stayed five weeks, breaking into five houses. Next he went to Wellington, whose he broke into eight houses, from one of which he stole seven diamond rings: and from another a £lO note. In. one house a man had caught him, but. he managed to get away. He took the stones from all the rings and threw the settings into Wellington harbour. Next he went to Christchurch, where he broke into three houses, and then to Dunedin, where he broke into three also.
The accused! pleaded guilty and was committed to the Supreme Court at Auckland for sentence. Accused was also remanded to appear at Christchurch on further charges.
