Richards’ victory lias assured him of second place in the American Davis Cup team. He haw already defeated Patterson in the semi-finals. William Johnston and Peck Griffin won the men’s doubles, defeating Kinsey brothers B—6, 7—5, 6—*l. —Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. STILL AN AMATEUR. NEWi YORK, Aug. 2. The executive committee of the United States Lawn Tennis Association decided that th© act of Tilden, the national singles champion, in publishing comments on a recent tournament at St. Louie in the form of interviews, was a violation of the amateur rules, but excused liim on the plea of ignorance and pledged adherence in the future. Ho was allowed to retain bis amateur status.

The executive committee further _ decided that players giving interviews commenting on a tournament in which they are at the time participating violated the rules •prohibiting players writing, provided tlio interview was given a nowspaper or syndicate for which the player writes. A resume of th© last day’s matches published when the results of the said matches are still current news is also a violation. The decision of the committee was handed to Tilden, who replied that the violation was not intentional. He has intended and still intends to abide by the rules. On consideration of his reply the committee allowed him to compete in the Davis Cup try-outs on August 3, 4 and 5.
