CAUSE OF CANCER.
A GERMAN’S CLAIM
BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRJGH/1 BE RILIN', Aug. 3. The Berliner Tageiblatt gives prominence to a statement by Professor Keysser, the cancer expert, alleging that he anticipated the recent discovery of Dr. Gye and Mr. J. E. Barnard, and has been defrauded of the fruits of his own labours. Professor Keyisiser says that in April and May, 1923, as no German money was available for scientific research, Professor Rupps! negotiated with a view to Obtaining English financial help for the continuance of Professor Keysser’s experiments. Professor R-uppel gave the English negotiators, representing the Ministry of Health, a detailed description of Professor Keysser’s results to date, namely, that the exciter of cancer was a fillerpassing virus, which could not produce a tumour unless certain conditions of cells predisposed them to that action. The scheme for English financial help fell through. Professor Keysser adds: “While it cannot be proved that Dr. Gye and Mr. Barnard were in any way connected with the English negotiators, it is remarkable that their experiments commenced in June, 1923. It is unbelievable that they had not heard of my experiments and the conclusion that cancer is due to ,a uniform virus, which is unable to operate unless a predisposed factor is present.”
