FARM WORKERS.
A KEEN DEMAND. HARD TO SECURE. July and August are the months of the year when dairy farmers are after assistance for their milking operations, and a curiosity to know if this year there was a greater demand than usual prompted a Star reporter to inquire from a Hawera labour bureau as t > the position of that branch of the la hour market. The agent said that there is always a demand for this time of the year, and this will be the easy for several weeks. Two weeks ago she had about 20 workers disengaged, but they have all gone, and she could place quite a number more. There is a keen demand for youths, who could get places at from 25s to 30s and keep. _ Every season a number of dairy farmers come to town to net men at this time of the year, anu, generally speaking, the type of man availab’e is fairly good. The wages paid average about £2, but a certain number of farmers pay up to £3, and offer a bonus to a good man. A large number of men, however, will not leave the district near to towns, and, if it were not so, many more could be p aced, for the bureaux have inquiries from many country places between here and Auckland. It is interesting to leairn also that raanv farmers will say they do not want immigrants. “Do not send me a ‘Hoinie,’ ” said one man. “I want a good colonial.” It i c quite clear that there is room for more men on farms if they were available.
